Focal Range and Applications
The 400-800mm is purpose-built for extreme telephoto work - wildlife, sports, and distant subjects where you can't get close. Its massive reach eliminates the need for teleconverters in many situations. The 70-200mm f/2.8 GM II covers the classic portrait and event range, offering much more versatility for weddings, portraits, and general photography where you need flexibility over extreme reach.
Aperture Performance and Image Quality
The 70-200mm's constant f/2.8 aperture provides exceptional low-light performance and beautiful bokeh throughout the zoom range. While the 400-800mm's variable f/6.3-8 aperture limits low-light capability, it delivers remarkable sharpness and detail at extreme focal lengths. Both lenses feature Sony's advanced G-series optics with excellent color rendition and minimal distortion.
Size, Weight, and Handling
The 400-800mm is a substantial lens requiring tripod support for extended use, weighing significantly more than the 70-200mm. The 70-200mm GM II offers excellent handheld usability with improved balance and weight distribution. Both feature weather sealing and robust build quality, but the 70-200mm provides much better portability for travel and event photography.
